The Guardians: PARKER Contemporary

CATOLOGUE

Friday July 18 -August 2nd

Developed during a residency at the renowned Morgan Conservatory in the United States, The Guardians is a new body of work for Melissa J Harvey(MJ) that draws on recurring dream imagery. The works explore themes of protection and transformation through the artist’s distinctive papermaking practice. Spraying hand-mixed pulp pigments of abaca fibre and recycled cotton results in textured, ethereal compositions by the artist. Presented for the first time in Brisbane, this series reflects a deeply personal journey from subconscious vision to physical form.Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Artist in Residence at the Morgan Conservatory

The Morgan Conservatory Artist in Residence program in Cleveland , Ohio suppled the resources to further develop my techniques in pulp printing and papermaking. My focus was to expand on combining my large scale pulp printing and pulp spraying techniques and to introduce aqueous pigments into my practice. The residency occured during the month of October 2024.

Guest Artist at Queensland Collegue of Arts and Design

I was a guest artist in the Print department at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University in February 2023. Holding inspiration from my immediate surroundings, both inside the papermaking studio and outside along the Maiwar River as I journeyed to and from the studio - I captured and recalled reflections of light on water, surface textures, and design elements that were visually immersive and at times surreal. During my time as a guest artist I experiment with a process called Pulp Printing and created many works but in particular a body of work called ‘Out to see(sea)’ pulp print’s made from surplus promotional Queensland Collegue of Arts and Design cotton t-shirts.
